Earlier, this temple was originally called “Jagannath Rai” but is now called ‘Jagdish temple’.

Due to its popularity, this temple became a landmark after which the region was named Jagdish Chawk to honor the Jagdish Temple.

Architecture of Jagdish Temple Udaipur

Jagdish temple is one of the best architectural monuments of the Mewar dynasty. Jagdish temple is built with the Indo- Aryan architectural style. 

This religious place has been constructed keeping in mind all the rules of Hindu Vastu Shastra, the Hindu architectural science in mind.

It is a three-storied temple built on a large raised platform, with exquisitely carved pillars of exquisite workmanship, large and spacious airy halls, and painted walls adorned with ceilings.

There are two huge stone sculptures, at the entrance of the Jagdish temple of Udaipur, which was built by the king at that time to welcome the visitors. Upon entering, an inscription engraved on a stone slab appears, which was installed by Maharana Jagat Singh to record his contribution to Jagdish temple.

The main temple is about 79 feet high and spread over an area of around 10,000 sq feet. The summit of the Jagdish temple is beautifully adorned with some dazzling statues of horsemen, elephants, musicians, and dancers who were practicing when this temple was established. 

There is a brass image of ‘Garuda’, who is considered as a half-man and half eagle creature in Hindu mythology. He is known as the vehicle mount (vahana) and guards the gates of the Lord Vishnu’s house. 

The next idol found in the main shrine is a four-armed idol of God Vishnu, which is considered one of the most beautiful features of the Jagdish temple.

The idol of God Jagannath has been carved with a piece of precious black stone, upon seeing it, you will become a true devotee of  Swami Jagannath.

Apart from this, it is also said that the statue of God Vishnu has a compelling effect on the devotees and brings peace to one’s mind.

History Behind Jagdish Temple Udaipur

Jagdish temple was built in the year 1651 under the rule of “Maharana Jagat Singh” who was the king of  Udaipur from 1628 to 1653. 

Jagdish Temple is said to be the home of Lord Vishnu and an iconic example of the Maru-Gujaru architecture of that era. Maharana Jagat Singh spent over 1.5 million rupees to construct and enhance the structure of the Jagdish temple. The temple was renovated at that time due to the Mughal invasion.

At that time, Mughals destroyed many statues and carvings inside the temple to take revenge from Rajput rulers. The Mughals took to vandalism to show their anger and frustrations on their defeat by the hands of Mewar rulers.

According to some religious speakers, it is believed that the marble slab inside the Jagdish temple holds magical powers. If you rub your shoulder, back, or knees on that marble slab, you will quickly get relief from any sort of body pain. Some people consider this as a misbelief, but any beliefs  associated with religion can’t be questioned.

 

Entry Fees and Timings of Jagdish Temple Udaipur

There is no ticket or entry fee for Jagdish Temple. You can visit this temple any day because it is open seven days a week.

The temple door mainly opens in two shifts.

During the first shift, the temple doors open at 4.15 am to 1.00 pm. Before the sunrise, worship is performed, and religious songs are played. You can feel and hear its melodious voice from far away. The second shift starts at 5:15 pm and lasts till 8 pm.
