The Untold Story behind Karni Mata
The main Temple of Karni Mata is in Deshnoke, a small town located about 30 km from Bikaner in Rajasthan. It is also popular as the “Temple of Rats“.
It is believed that Karni Mata was basically a Hindu sage and was born in 1387 AD as the seventh daughter of the Charan Rajput clan. She was considered an incarnation of Goddess Durga Maa.
According to history, the original Name of Karni Mata was Ridhu Bai. She was married to Depa Ji Charan, of Sathika village But after just 2 years of her marriage, she expressed unwillingness to her husband to engage in conjugal relations.
Despite the initial mockery from her husband, She got her sister Gulab married her husband and left her village and family forever to fulfill his desire to leave everything and live life like a sage.
After wandering with her followers for some time, she finally reached Deshnoke and settled there. Hence she has since been known as Karni Mata.
The history behind Karni Mata Temple Udaipur
Shri Mansapurna Karni Mata Temple in Udaipur was built by “Maharana Karan Singh” from 1620 to 1628 to mark the boundary and security of Udaipur.
Along with this, the area of Machala Magra was also developed by Maharana for residence.
Initially, the temple was abandoned for a long time and was later developed by Sri Manshapurna Karni Mata Mata Development Committee in the year 1997.
It is believed that the foundation stone of the two main forts of Rajasthan, the fort of Jodhpur, and the fort of Bikaner, was laid by Karni Mata.
In the year 1538, while returning to Deshnok, the caravan Stopped to drink water near Kolayat tehsil, in Bikaner district, When the followers returned, she disappeared there and according to history at the time her age was 151 years.
The Main Karni Mata Temple Udaipur

The unique story behind rats in Karni Mata temple is that once the stepson of Karni Mata, Laxman went to Kartik fair in village Kolayat and fell and died in the Kapil Sarovar of that village in an attempt to drink water.
After her death, Karni Mata constantly pleaded to Dharmaraja, the god of death, and finally, the god of death agreed to return her son as a rat and also permitted her that all her male children will be reincarnated as rats.
The Kabbas are known to be very holy and if you feed them sweets and eat the food nibbled by them, it is considered to be “prestigious”.

Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway is a popular cable car ride, which has been installed in the year 2008 to help people especially old or disabled people reach the main temple.
This ropeway connects Machala Hill Top in Udaipur and Sri Karni Mata Temple in Deendayal Upadhyay Park.
also, it is the first ropeway in Rajasthan. The total length of the Karni Mata ropeway is 387 meters, which runs through a fixed-grip mono cable.
